Spanish Restaurants and Tapas Bars in New York City
My fiancee and I have been on a mission lately to try and find some of the best tapas restaurants in New York City. We've eaten at some great restaurants such as Degustation and El Pote but we're always looking for more. Recently a French/Moroccan tapas restaurant opened in our neighborhood called Casaville and it's really fantastic. We're already gone on two double dates there with other couples.
Tapas restaurants are great because it allows you to try a little of everything. At regular restaurants, the pressure is on to pick a dish and hope that you picked the right thing. With tapas? pick a bunch and try a little of everything. We also love seafood paella so what better place to get a great seafood paella than at a spanish restaurant!? (El Pote has an awesome seafood paella).
This weekend we celebrated the Fiancee's birthday and of course I was searching for a new tapas restaurant to try. A friend recommended Cafe Espanol in the west village so on Saturday night we ventured out to give it a try. Rarely disappointed with good spanish tapas, of course we had another lovely dinner and enjoyed every second of it.
And this morning I received a great instant message from the same friend who recommend Cafe Espanol and life got a lot easier lol. SpanishNewYork.com has a great page on its site dedicated to recommending the best Spanish food New York city has to offer and so far the recommendations look pretty legit. Sure there's always menupages, but it's gotten increasingly hard to trust the reviews of my fellow New Yorkers. So now with a new list under my belt, I think I know where our next few dinners will take place.
Their rating system is based on diamonds, 5 being the best. Check out the link above for all of the reviews. Below are some of their favorites:

Pipa
38 East 19th Street, New York
(212) 677-2233 Decor: When the helpful folks at Pipa sit you down in their darkly sensuous surroundings, next to the slightly brighter, inviting bar space, you know you are in for a treat. The decor is muted when quiet is called for and extravagant when subtlety would be condescension. Food: The food arrives as pleasingly presented and luxuriously textured as the multi-hued, broken-tile tables. Rich with regional tastes one expects, but rarely receives, in a high-end tapas restaurant. The aromatic piquancy of the cheese plate blends perfectly with the tang of masterfully prepared chicken liver. Sweet fruit accents enhance the sea-saltiness of skillfully prepared meat dishes. The flatbreads, bruschettas by any other name, are as good as their mixed ingredients indicate. Desserts are prepared with a delightfully restrained sweetness. Prices: The price, exactly as one would expect, is high. Design, good service, and excellent food rarely come cheap. At least you get what you pay for. Prices: $6-$12, Tapas. ![]()

Food: Pure, strong, fresh, delicious flavors. The service was excellent, although the waitress didn't know a word of Spanish. They even give free hummus with pita bread and olives while you wait. Everything we tried was great, which included solomillo, mejillones, chorizo e higos, pulpo a la gallega, and zanahorias tapena. The croquetas were ok.

Billy Joel @ Shea
I was lucky enough to actually get 2 tickets to Billy Joel's concert at Shea which will be the final concert before the tear the stadium down. I went online on Saturday morning, had to wait a while, but finally got thru and was able to get 2 tickets in the upper deck behind home plate for $100 each. I chose "best available" when purchasing but there were only two choices....the $50 ticket and the $100 ticket (maybe it was $95? but it was close to $100).
Currently on StubHub.com, tickets are going for as much as $20,000 a piece. That's corret...$20,000 each. The person who sells that ticket is set to make $19,900 on each ticket. And when I say "that person" chances are it's a ticket broker. There is obviously some flaw in the system where brokers and scalpers are always able to get the best seats for every concert and them sell them at a massive premium. On the one hand, you can say that the massive premium is fair market price and if someone is willing to pay that price, that's the actual market value of the ticket. However, if that is the case, why not auction off the ticket in the first place? 507tixx.com can't be loving the fact that THEY could be selling these tickets for their actual market price, but instead a scalper is and making all the profit on the sale.
With that being said, is $20,000/ticket really the fair market price? Probably not. You'll have to go to Ebay to see what people are actually bidding and to see what the true market price actually is at the current time. To get an even better idea? Check out the completed ebay listings to see what people actually ended up paying.
The system is flawed and needs to be fixed. Is there a way to block the scalpers and professional brokers out of the initial buy? I don't know. Should all tickets be initially auctioned off to the highest bidder and therefore be sold for it's market value at first sale? I don't know that either. What I do know is that I'm a HUGE Billy Joel fan. I don't have hundreds of dollars to spend on tickets and while I ended up with shitty seats at $100/ticket, some broker got the great seats at the same $100/ticket and stands to make a ton of money.
Enough ranting...as Crazy Carl just pointed out "i think every seat at shea is pretty good. and you're witnessing history". Great point Carl. Even in my shitty seats, I'll be at the concert and loving every second of it.![]()

Who Sent Us Guitar Hero III?!?!?!?
A few days ago I came home to a delivery box that contained Guitar Hero III and had NO idea how had sent it. I finally found out today who sent it and this is my fiancee's recap and thank you to the wonderful people who bought it for us. Although the names have been changed, this is absolutely based on a true event. I thought that her email was so great that I wanted to share it with all of you. Enjoy!
Hi Guys,
The other night as I was hanging on for dear life during a treacherous cab ride in the snow, I answered my phone only to hear Mathew [that's me!] on the other end joyfully asking, "Did you send me an early Valentine's Day present?"
"Not me," I answered, thinking to myself, um….Valentine's day is about HIM getting ME presents, not vice versa.
"Well", Mathew continued, "there's a big box here addressed to us and inside is Guitar Hero, are you sure it wasn't you?"
Wishing it was me, I answered, "No. Honestly. I didn't get you Anything. Nothing at all. Barely a Card. Sorry….and by the way, what are you getting me?" But I digress...
When I arrived home, there it was. Shiny. New. Glorious.
There was no packing slip. Only the name of a company. There was no hint as to whom had bestowed upon us this awesomeness. Not one small clue. We were at a complete loss as to how this package mysteriously arrived addressed to both our names (even Mathew was spelled correctly with Just ONE T!). Who on earth is ferociously fierce enough to not only send Guitar Hero, but to spell it right…with just ONE T!? Who?!
The suspense was maddening. We stayed up all night, pacing around the apartment, drawing flow-charts and diagrams, creating our own personal 6-degrees of separation, desperately trying to figure the mystery out until we collapsed with exhaustion two days later. Finally, being nothing short of a super-sleuth, Mathew dug around and got the phone number to the company from which it came. As luck would have it, the company's phone lines don't open until 10am Pacific, so at 1pm today, Mathew frantically dialed, desperate to get this mystery solved once and for all. At last, a friendly customer-service associate answered his myriad of questions, "Who Killed JFK?, Where is Hoffa's body buried?, What is the Meaning of Life and Who on Earth Sent Us This Treasure Called Guitar Hero?!". Then, with one simple answer, the customer service representative gave him the answer we were so desperately seeking. "It was ordered by a Mr. John Tinsley [made up name]."
Light shone in to his windowless office and the sound of angels singing rang out.
Mustering every little bit of strength he had left, Mathew dialed my phone number. When I picked up the phone, I could hear he was panting heavily like he had just completed a 5K run. When he caught what little breath he had left, he heaved, "John…...Lisa [John's girlfriend]...it was ordered by a Mr. John Tinsley…" He then dropped the receiver and fell to the ground in a heap of sweat and exhaustion.
What else can we say, but WOW! And THANK YOU! And to what do we owe this honor?! And did I say WOW!!!!!
We can only think of one way to properly thank you and that would be to give us a couple of weeks to practice and then let us have you two over to battle it out!
Nothing says thank you like a good old fashioned Wii ass-whooping, and we really want to say thank you.
Seriously, Thank You.
Love,
Fiancee and Mathew (Future Guitar Hero Champions of the World.)
Holy shit, I can't believe this still happens in America
If you thought race was an uncomfortable issue in the Democratic presidential primary, wait 'til you get a load of what's going on in the Democratic primary in the Memphis area's 9th District of Tennessee, where a shockingly worded flier paints Jewish Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.) as a Jesus hater.

Making money on my blog update #1
I added amazon's contextual ads to my blog....I think. I input the code but have no idea if its working or not. So...we'll see if it makes me rich or not :) I also added an amazon widget to the left side of the site which shows some of the current hot deals going on at Amazon. Check it out, buy some stuff ;)
$3000 in one day from Amazon?
Dmitry Davydov is a professional blogger, affiliate, online guru and in one of his recent articles, he talks about how he made over $3K in one day from Amazon's Associate program. I'm not surprised that someone who generates thousands of hits a day onto multiple blogs can really drive traffic to different websites and rack up affiliate money, but the question is, can lowly bloggers like me do it?
I have some google ads on my blog, an affiliate link here and there, and I barely make anything from it. So, the question is, how do you go from making close to nothing, to making something?
I'm going to continue to read Dmitry's sites and hopefully share what I learn so that all of us lowly bloggers can soon make even a few bucks a day doing what we enjoy.
Stay tuned!

The Shame of St. Louis
taken from: TheNation.com
I had originally wanted to mention this article here on the BurnTees blog just because of the subject matter, but as I read through I found something else...another mention of our friend Jessica Valenti who runs Feministing.com.
Over the past seven years, as Michael Reynolds wrote in a Nation cover story last June, George W. Bush's faith-based Administration has transformed the small-time abstinence-only business into a billion-dollar industry profiting off tax-payer money being spent on ineffective new school curriculums.
"I can't think of another federal program where so much money was spent without any oversight and to such little effect," James Wagoner, president of Advocates for Youth, told Reynolds. "It wasn't that policy-makers didn't know that abstinence-only didn't work. In 2000 the Institute of Medicine issued a scathing report on these programs. But they went full steam ahead despite the warning. It's beyond naïve. It's immoral."
Thanks to recent Nation guest blogger Jessica Valenti for alerting me to the story of two eighth grade students in St. Louis who felt the same way and recently tried to protest this naivete and immorality. Other than a local CNN report, Valenti's website, Feministing.com, was the first--and still one of the only--publications or broadcast operations on or off-line to report on Tori Shoemaker and Cheyenne Byrd's brave stand against abstinence-only education.
The two students at Louis & Clark Junior High School protested their school's abstinence-only education program by wearing shirts to school adorned with condoms, reading "Safe Sex or No Sex." For daring to make a statement, they were suspended for two days from school by the regional superindent, who called the shirts "inappropriate" and a "distraction." As Valenti adds: "Yes, because a 'distraction' in the form of free speech is clearly much worse than spreading dangerous misinformation about sex to teens."
The CNN video shows the girls to be smart, thoughtful, engaged citizens--just the sort of students our schools should be proud of producing.
I also wanted to point out some interesting comments from the website where the article was originally published:
well...i agree with the kidsm but...ya can't let middle school kids run around with condom shirts on...trust me.
Like others have said...it's all in the presentation. Time and place are key. Nothing smart or thoughtful about a student (subordinate in the context of middle school) using shock value to drive an agenda that their parents could have privately and appropriately consulted with the principal on.
If they had worn "Fuck liberals" t-shirts, I imagine this column would have rethought the standards of free speech.
Slow news day?
Posted by SLIVER 02/08/2008 @ 5:57pmSorry Peter,
But this is just the type of twisted sense of morality that only validates the concerns of many Americans when we Pastors and others tell them that the left want's to abandon morals and family values.
These kids were rightfully suspended. I noticed only one parent commented and he was an idiot. He displayed an obvious lack of parental skills.
If they had decent parents, they would be grounded at home with no privileges for at least a month.
This is just another example of the leftist moral sickness that permeates our society. Really sad.

Display song lyrics on your ipod
Personally, I didn't know that this was possible until last week, but it's a pretty awesome feature. I'm also including a link at the bottom of the article to a really neat widget from Yahoo that automatically downloads album artwork and lyrics into iTunes for you.
Q I listen to opera and other music in languages other than English. Much of this music comes with lyrics and English translations. I like listening on my MP3 player, but I don’t like having to carry around the CD notes to read while I listen. Is there a portable player that would allow me to read the lyrics while I listen?
Yes. The Apple iPods are capable of displaying lyrics while you listen. This capability has been on the standard iPods and on iPod Nanos for a while, and has just been added to the new iPod Touch and to the iPhone. It requires the lyrics to be entered into the song file, either manually or by cutting and pasting.
You enter lyrics using Apple’s companion iTunes software, on either a Windows or a Macintosh computer. To do so, you select the song, then, from the File menu, click on “Get Info.” You then select the tab called “Lyrics,” which brings up an empty window. You can type in the lyrics or first copy them from a Web site (or other source) and then paste them into this window. You then click OK, and, when you synchronize the song with your iPod, the lyrics come with it.
On the standard iPod itself, to view the lyrics while listening, you press the large center button multiple times until the lyrics appear. On the iPod Touch and iPhone, you tap on the image of the album cover while a song is playing. If the song file contains lyrics, they appear.
Pretty awesome right? As promised, here's a link to a really cool widget from Yahoo that will automatically download the album artwork and lyrics. If someone knows of something better, leave a comment and let me know! - http://widgets.yahoo.com/widgets/itunes-companion2/6/08

Congress, having already dealt with every other problem, decides to enlarge "In God We Trust" on new coins

ha, awesome article
Our congress takes care of the IMPORTANT stuff
Category: Kooks • Religion
Posted on: February 3, 2008 6:47 PM, by PZ Myers
We're in a war, we're looking at a looming mortgage crisis, and I can tell you that our educational system is getting flushed down the tubes, and what does our brave congress do? Why, it decides to make the words "In God We Trust" bigger on our coins.
Responding to complaints from the Religious Right, Congress has passed legislation mandating that the phrase "In God We Trust" be moved from the edge to the back or front of the new presidential dollar coins.
President George W. Bush signed the measure into law Dec. 26. It was tucked into a $555 billion domestic spending bill after having been pushed by U.S. Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.). Brownback and other Religious Right conservatives have been complaining about the new coins since the series started last year.
Oh, yeah. That's a solution. Maybe God will like us better if put his name in bigger print on our money.
They're all demented fuckwits.
Big man Shaq's monthly bills = whopping $1.3 mil
Maybe it's just me, but no matter how much money you make, how is it smart to spend 72% of your monthly income when you really don't have to?
http://www.signonsandiego.com/sports/20080127-9999-1s27gallery.html
Miami Heat center Shaquille O'Neal is that man. Consider his monthly expenditures:
$156,116 on mortgages.
$110,505 on vacations.
$60,417 on gifts.
$26,560 on babysitters.
$24,300 on gasoline.
$22,190 on maids.
$17,220 on clothes.
$12,775 on food.
On top of that, the tax man gets his share: O'Neal, 35, pays about $500,000 a month in income taxes.
The details of O'Neal's checkbook were revealed this month as part of his ongoing divorce from Shaunie O'Neal, reports The Miami Herald. They filed in September to end their five-year marriage. The couple has four children, and each partner has one child from previous relationships.
But don't worry about O'Neal's financial well-being – he has plenty to pay the bills at his Star Island mansion and beyond.
O'Neal is the second-highest paid NBA player, behind the Boston Celtics' Kevin Garnett, at $20 million a year. He listed his monthly income at $1.8 million – $1.6 million in Heat salary and $220,000 in business investments and endorsements.
On top of his basketball duties, the 7-foot-1, 325-pound O'Neal also is a reserve Miami Beach police officer. But O'Neal's not getting rich as a cop – he volunteers for that duty.

CLINTON ROOTING FOR GIANTS
Former President Bill Clinton will pull for the New York Giants in their Super Bowl matchup against the undefeated New England Patriots.
“They're the underdog, and they're my home team. But I'm glad the Patriots are undefeated, and I'm glad that teamwork from both teams is back at the center of professional sports,” Clinton told about 400 people Thursday in an elementary school auditorium in Barnwell, S.C., as he campaigned for wife Hillary.
Clinton at first joked he wouldn't answer the question when asked by a member of the crowd during a campaign stop because “New York, Massachusetts and Rhode Island are Hillary's three best states.”
He said it also was a tough decision to make because he plays golf with Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and considers him a friend and “remarkable man.”
